Updated your website’s Google Analytics with GA4? If not, here’s how to get it sorted!

If your business has a website, then you’ll probably have Google Analytics set up as a way to measure the effectiveness of your digital marketing efforts*. As well as measuring traffic into your site, visitor behaviour on the site and a whole heap more, Google Analytics allows you to test and refine your digital marketing campaigns by tracking conversions – one of the main reasons we love this tool so much!

Recently, Google has introduced what it’s calling ‘the next generation of Analytics’ – Google Analytics 4 (often referred to as GA4). GA4 is essentially an updated version of the original Analytics tool, which has new features that make for even better data gathering. These include:

  • The ability to combine data from users of both your website and app (if you have one) into a single Google Analytics property

  • Explorations’ reporting, which empowers you with a suite of powerful new reporting tools for advanced analysis of how your site is being used

  • Replacement of ‘bounce rate’ with ‘engagement rate’ to enable more useful reporting for websites or apps that rely on a single page format

It’s important to note that Google has announced that its existing Analytics solution will stop processing data in July of 2023, and that your historical Analytics data will only be available for a short time after that. With this in mind, we recommend that your switch to GA4 now and also download historical data that you may want to refer to in future.

Making the change is really quick and easy – just follow this link for a set of instructions issued by Google that covers what to do if you’re applying GA4 as the first Google Analytics solution on your site, or if you’re upgrading your existing Analytics. If your website is built in a third party CMS like Wix, WordPress or Shopify, there are instructions to help you as well.

If this is all sounding like Greek to you (or, if you get it but you just don’t have time to sort it!), don’t stress – we’re here to help. Drop us a line and we’ll get one of our Google specialists to update your Google Analytics.

*Side note: if you don’t already have Google Analytics set up for your website, make that your number one marketing priority for today. Here’s an article that shows you how (it’s quick, promise) – if you get stuck then don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
