Experienced, Consumer Focused Marketer: Meet Meg Hockly
Have you met Meg? She’s been with Matter, a social media marketing agency in New Zealand, for over 3 wonderful years.
Currently a senior associate at the Auckland social media agency, Meg brings a wealth of experience with brand management. We chatted with Meg about how she got into social media and digital marketing, her super cool overseas experience with Vanity Fair Corporation and how she sees the future of digital marketing. Humble Beginnings
Meg's journey into the world of digital marketing began at the University of Waikato, where she started her career handling student retention. This was her first taste of digital marketing through newsletters and email marketing, back when this stuff was just being established.
From there, she joined the rest of New Zealand’s youth in London, where she landed a super cool role working for Vanity Fair Corporation in the handbags and luggage division. Sounds dangerous for anyone with a soft spot for shopping and accessories!
While working here, she witnessed the birth of Facebook and adapted her skills to leverage this new platform, which has now become a staple in her marketing strategy for various clients.
After a while, she came back to New Zealand and joined Westfield as a Senior Marketing Manager. At the time, the retail company were shifting gears away from traditional marketing strategies towards digital. Meg was a natural in the digital realm, resulting in her eventually being promoted to Digital Marketing Manager for the whole of New Zealand!
Seeking flexibility
After gaining some impressive experience client side and giving birth to two lovely kids, Meg was seeking something more flexible to juggle life as a working mum.
Matter Agency was the perfect fit, as it allowed her to continue her passion for digital marketing while maintaining a flexible lifestyle. She loves the job so much, she even helped Emma – our lead gen expert and Meg’s old colleague from Westfield – join the Matter team!
Favourite Element of Digital Marketing
Meg is an all-rounder in the digital space, but if she had to choose a favourite element of the digital marketing sphere it would have to be content!
Crafting engaging content and developing brand imagery is her passion, particularly when working with new clients to establish their digital presence. She hones in on understanding the target audience, which helps her devise effective strategies to resonate with consumers, ultimately boosting brand awareness and engagement.
As clients have requested technical know-how, Meg has responded by deep diving into the behind-the-scenes of Ads Managers and analytics platforms, ensuring everything is formatted correctly.
Throughout her career, Meg has learned the value of patience and adaptability when working with clients who are new to digital marketing. Understanding their needs and guiding them through the process has been a rewarding experience, solidifying her belief in the importance of tailoring strategies to suit individual businesses and their audiences.
Future of Digital Marketing
There’s some nervous chatter about the future of marketing with AI, but Meg is confident it will help rather than hinder our marketing efforts.
Meg's vision for the future of digital marketing involves a harmonious integration of AI as a powerful tool. She believes that AI will streamline processes, aid research, and enhance efficiency. However, she emphasizes the need for human creativity and authenticity in content creation to ensure its effectiveness.
As attention spans shorten, Meg foresees that creating content that captivates and resonates with the audience will be crucial for marketers. Understanding consumer behaviour and adapting strategies to suit their preferences will continue to be the cornerstone of successful digital marketing campaigns.
